Navigating Media Hype While Trip Planning 🕵🏻‍♀️

Hi Reader,

In an age of viral reels, sensational headlines, and perfectly curated travel feeds, it’s easy to feel like every destination is either overrated or dangerous. The truth is, most places are far more nuanced than what your algorithm or news channels wants you to believe.

If you want to travel smarter (and not fall for media BS), here’s how to sift through all the noise and make decisions based on reality, not hype:

🧭 Understand what your media sources are trying to tell you.

News outlets and social media influencers thrive on attention. That means:

  • Fear sells. Crime, scams, and “don’t go here” stories are popular on the news and social media because people fixate on them.
  • Extremes go viral. Videos labeling a place as a “paradise” or the “worst place ever” is going to perform better than a video just labeled as "go here for your next vacation".
  • Nuance gets lost among all the commotion. Everyone becomes focused on the negative or overhyped aspects of a place instead of its true nature.

Bottom line? Don't take anything at face value. If you see something that seems a bit sensational or that's an extreme, ask yourself what the incentive is behind the content.

🔎 Cross-Check Everything

Don’t rely on a single TikTok or headline. Instead:

  • Compare multiple sources
  • Look for consistency across perspectives
  • Check dates. Because some "warnings" and viral posts are outdated.

A destination might have had issues months or years ago but be completely different today. Kayla was in Puerto Vallarta a year ago and had a wonderful time. Her friend was there a couple of months ago and had to take cover in his hotel room due to cartel unrest. Today, people are back to vacationing there like normal and planning trips there for later this year.

If you look up the top reels on Instagram right now for Puerto Vallarta though, some of them contain the outdated info from a couple of months ago. Researching more broadly, you'll find it's perfectly safe to visit now.

🗣️ Prioritize Local Voices

Want the real story? Listen to people who actually live there.

  • Follow local creators, not just visitors.
  • Read comments. Not just captions. If a caption isn't true, people more in the know are usually quick to point it out in the comments.
  • Check community forums and traveler discussions. Most destinations have a facebook page where people post real time info instead of headlines.

Locals often provide context that outsiders miss. A perfect example of this is how the night before we were supposed to leave for our group trip to Egypt last month, a government social media page put out a post on Twitter and Instagram that all US citizens in Egypt should flee the country immediately.

Naturally, this was initially a bit concerning to us and several of our group members. But we couldn't find any info on the reasoning behind the post. After reading through the comment section, reaching out to the local embassy for them to tell us they'd received no such communication, and talking with our guide on the ground, we determined the government post was false information.

Sure enough the very next day, a revised post was sent out where Egypt was listed as having the same travel advisory that it's had for the past several years (a level 2: the same as France, the UK, Italy, and other popular vacation destinations).

🧠 Trust Patterns Not One Off Stories

One bad experience doesn’t define a destination.
Look for:

  • Repeated themes across reviews
  • Balanced opinions (pros and cons)
  • Realistic expectations

Consistency is your best indicator of truth. Don't let one person's bad experience (or their opinion with no experience) dictate how you travel.

The world isn’t as dangerous or as flawless as it’s often portrayed online. The key is to stay informed without becoming overwhelmed.

Do your research and stay aware. But don’t let fear-based narratives or overhyped content dictate your journey!

From our suitcase to yours,

Kayla & Amanda
